Bulgarian collar tabs of the National Labour Service.

Period: 1936-1944

Model 1936 service pattern.

After the Treaty of Neuilly, Bulgaria, like Germany, was no longer allowed to organize regular military service, and its professional army was limited to 20,000 men, including 1,000 officers and 19,000 soldiers, together with internal police forces and customs units on the border. Heavy equipment such as tanks, submarines and bombers was prohibited.

Bulgaria bypassed these restrictions by creating the “Labour Corps troops”: an officially civilian organization, but uniformed and provided with military training and structure.

This organization was known as the Compulsory National Labour Service from 1920 to 1935, then as the Labour Corps from 1935 to 1944.

The original branch colour of this service was a very light blue. As it could be confused with the light blue of the air force, the colour had to be changed to green.
